Lil' Mo: On The Rise

Interview and Profile by
Amoi Bonny

Elektra recording artist Lil' Mo is making a huge name for herself and her album hasn't even dropped yet. This singer/songwriter has toured with the likes of Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot at Lillith Fair and can be heard on Missy's "Hot Boyz" single. This petite R&B princess can get on stage and blow your mind away. Her album, Based On a True Story, is just one of the many places her talents are showcased. Lil' Mo has written for a variety of artists such as Timbaland, Blackstreet, 702, Nicole, Next, Total, and Changing Faces, as well as having collaborated with a wide variety of artists such as Old Dirty Bastard and her recent working with new recording artist Tamia.

Growing up on various parts of Long Island, Lil' Mo began showing interest for stardom at an early age. She and her siblings put on talent shows in their home and pretended to be performing at the legendary Apollo. Her ingenious creativity finally paid off years later, when equipped with just a pen and a pad, Mo, along with her crew Flavahood Entertainment, began writing songs and submitting them. They were finally chosen to write for the Nicole Ray album and were discovered.

Lil' Mo's debut album "Based On a True Story" is just that, her story. "It's about my life, my heart, my story." She's hopeful that fans will be able to find a song off the 15-track compilation that they can relate to. The album's first single, "Ta Da" has recently began picking up heavy radio and video airplay, and fans can look forward to a few appearances on the album by Timbaland, Missy, Big Dog and a few new artists. Bad Boy's latest urban superstar, Carl Thomas (one of my personal favorites) performs a track with Mo. That duet, called "The Kaleidoscope of Love", is sure to be hot. An ascending star himself, Carl admits to being "a big Lil' Mo fan."

Carl is not alone in his praise of Lil' Mo. She has been getting rave reviews all around, and her writing skills have even been compared to that of singer/songwriter/producer Lauryn Hill. Although Lil' Mo is currently out promoting her album she is also working with a host of new artists and is even interested in doing something with Eminem!

If Mo is the least bit cocky about her talent, she doesn't show it at all. She is bubbling with personality and an incredible sense of humor. She wants her fans to know that she's "real". "I bleed red blood, I'm no different from them. People get scared to talk to me, don't be scared to talk to me. I'm the same as you."

Don't be scared to approach her, and don't be scared to check out the album, which is scheduled to be released January 2001. Expect to see much more of Lil' Mo in the years to come. She's already started the millennium with a bang.
