DKNY by Donna Karan

WHAT IT IS: An energetic scent built on a base of tangerine, ginger, ivy, juniper berry, sandalwood and red maple.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Leigh: What a manly smell. This is definitely a happy hour fragrance.
Laura: A pretty standard sporty-citrusy scent for everyday, or when you want something light, so people don't smell you before they see you at the club.
L2: Better than the women's version. I'd actually hang with a dude wearing this.
Shawn: Too generic and ordinary. A million other colognes smell like this.
Peter: This could be any other sporty cologne; it's the Zelig of men's fragrances.
E.R.: Great bottle design, but I don't detect a remarkable difference between the men's and women's DKNY scents.

GOOD LIFE by Davidoff

WHAT IT IS: An aromatic blend of no less than 15 fragrances, designed to evoke fig trees, green meadows, and fresh hay.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Laura: Too strong to wear unless everyone around you smells so badly, you ONLY want to smell yourself all day.
Shawn: Davidoff hasn't made a bad scent yet, but this ain't no Cool Water.
L2: I wouldn't date the guy who wore this! Yuck!
Peter: This is kinda elegant, but it's definitely for an older guy.
E.R.: This smells like fresh vegetables.
Leigh: A little strong! Not my style, but good for a case of "Saturday Night Fever".

HELMUT LANG by Helmut Lang

WHAT IT IS: A woody-white musk designed to develop uniquely on each wearer.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Peter: Wow. This is really complex -- it starts off powdery but ends up light and smooth. Definitely a special-occasion scent.
E.R.: Powdery, clean, light and androgynous. A woman would need to get very close to a man to detect this scent. And maybe that's the idea.
L2: Not too bad kids! A bit girly, if you ask me. I can dig it for a while, though.
Shawn: I could go on and on about this one. Just think about the feeling of a fresh new haircut.
Leigh: This has got a real downtown feel to it. I would definitely roll with this, for work and play.
Laura: This is so NOT masculine. I'd think twice about any man wearing this.

SANDER by Jil Sander

WHAT IT IS: An aromatic fragrance with hints of Brazilian mint, cashmere wood, and myrrh.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
E.R.: The bottle looks like an inkwell. This is very similar to Fahrenheit, but not as sweet. It's outdoorsy and casual, like green fields.
Laura: What a great bottle design. Different without being too clunky. Two good smells that never miss -- citrus and vanilla -- need I say more?
Peter: If you can't get laid wearing this you're dead.
Shawn: This is the finest men's cologne I've smelled in a LONG while.
L2: The man who wears this is guaranteed a boot-knockin' evening with me.
Leigh: Yes. Not too strong, very versatile. I'm taking this home with me!
Shawn: No, you're not!

CONTRADICTION by Calvin Klein

WHAT IT IS: A spicy oriental fragrance with notes of key lime, clementine, sage, and cardamom.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Leigh: This is a nice scent. Not too strong, not too fruity. I could see wearing this casually as well as a jacket and tie.
Peter: This is a Saturday night scent, it's really sophisticated.
L2: Pretty good, I must say. I can hang with a guy wearing this for the whole night.
E.R.: This bottle is like a piece of modern art, but the scent's a little too close to Lemon Pledge.
Shawn: Very Calvin Klein, which is to say, very elegant. Too much like Obsession though.
Laura: This bottle is a little dull. It's modern but ho-hum. As for the scent, it's spicy, woodsy and musky, but it reminds me too much of Obsession for Women.

HUGO by Hugo Boss

WHAT IT IS: A casual and sporty fragrance with essences of citrus, apples and pine.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Laura: This is a cool bottle. It's very rugged and slightly "dangerous". This is a very nice sporty scent that definitely says, "SMELL ME -- I AM MAN."
Shawn: Very classy and versatile. I think this would go best with a classic navy Hugo Boss three-button suit.
Leigh: A really nice scent, casual or dressy.
L2: Well, this is a bit overpowering. It actually made me cross my eyes sniffing it!
E.R.: This bottle is VERY Swiss Army. This is a scent for a very strong, confident man. Woodsy and citrusy, with a bit of tobacco.
Peter: Masculine and classy, but not like Hugo Boss' usual testosterone-laced scents.

DESIRE by Alfred Dunhill

WHAT IT IS: A fresh scent composed of lime, neroli, apple, bergamot, patchouli, rose, vanilla, musk, and labdanum.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
E.R.: Well, you'll never lose the bottle top. This has got a clean, soapy scent. It's debonair -- it reminds me of Roger Moore as James Bond.
Shawn: Great packaging, great scent.
Leigh: A little overpowering, but not bad.
Laura: Nice bottle; it looks like a flask. This smells kind of powdery, with faint vanilla and citrus notes. From personal experience, this smells much better on, but it wouldn't make me turn my head if someone passed by wearing it.
Peter: Clean but sophisticated, this has got a real international playboy smell to it.
L2: It's got a real mature and sophisticated scent. I would definitely "desire" the man who wears this.
